Call for Papers on Systems Science Approaches to Health in the Developing World

Nov 22, 2016

This special issue aims to highlight research that has applied systems science and associated mathematical modeling frameworks to existing or emerging health issues in developing countries.

Systems science is defined as an interdisciplinary field that studies the nature of systems. It ranges from simple to complex and can be found in such diverse fields as human biology, epidemiology, sociology, and organizational and communications theory. It is increasingly being harnessed to understand, predict, and address complex challenges in health. However, applications of systems science have tended to target more affluent parts of the world, whereas their use in developing-world contexts, or for health challenges specific to these contexts, is relatively limited.

Commonly used systems science approaches include agent-based modeling and systems dynamic modeling. However, the submissions need not be limited to these methodologies. Other forms of complex system modeling and mathematical modeling that use data from multiple variables from several sectors (e.g., ambient temperature and human mobility) will be considered favorably. Papers that focus only on theoretical aspects or development of conceptual models that lack real data are unlikely to be accepted.

We invite researchers to contribute original research articles as well as reviews to stimulate further work in this area. Work carried out in low- and lower middle-income countries is encouraged.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

Systems science approaches and mathematical models that describe population prevalence or incidence of chronic diseases, injuries, infectious diseases, and health-related behaviours
Reviews of systems science approaches and mathematical models used to describe and analyze morbidity and mortality.

Studies comparing the utility of particular models or approaches in describing health-related issues.
