Urban Mental Health and LondonMood Project

Feb 17, 2016

Cities can affect what we feel. The surrounding environment makes us happy, sad, stressed, anxious, well and ill. Research tells us that city life is an important risk factor for depression, anxiety, and even schizophrenia. So how can we better understand the link between urban design/city living and mental health?

LondonMood is study being led by researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London. The aim is to investigate how people feel in different environments and neighborhoods. The participants downloaded an app on their smartphones and for 1 week they were sent 3 alerts a day and asked to report how they were feeling and take a photograph of their environment. The app automatically recorded their GPS co-ordinates at the time of the app opening. Here is the website for the app download.
